Back in 1859, Earth was blasted by a massive solar emission, now called "The Carrington Event". The result was absolute electromagnetic chaos...

Auroras were seen as far south as the Caribbean and Hawaii—people thought the sky was on fire.
Telegraph operators reported being electrically shocked as their telegraph papers caught fire.
Messages sent without batteries, powered purely by electromagnetic currents
Compass needles went wild.

That was, of course, decades before the electrification of modern society. If such a Carrington-level event were to happen now, it would knock out power grids, disable satellites and GPS, disrupt the internet, aviation, and banking. It would likely curtail the cooling systems on the 400 or so nuclear power stations around the world.

As we carry on 'life as normal' right now, we would do well to consider, it's not if a Carrington-level event is coming, but when.
